Coercive Control
I have a master’s in the psychology of coercive control and work with families and individuals who have been impacted by cults, religious and spiritual abuse, and coercive relationships. My expert witness work exposes me to cases within the family court system and topics that expand to the world of cults, sex trafficking, the troubled teen industry, and groups or situations of undue influence, manipulation, and coercion.
Coercive control is a strategic pattern of behavior designed to exploit, control, create dependency and dominate. The victim's every day existence is micromanaged and their space for action as well as potential as a human being is limited and controlled by the abuser.
Initially love bombing and charm may occur to get the victim into the relationship. Gaslighting, isolation, economic control, financial abuse and rules and regulations are gradually introduced over time once the victim is emotionally invested. A consequence will exist if these spoken or unspoken rules are broken. The rules apply to the victim rather than the perpetrator which creates a double standard and the victim fears the consequence if they break a rule.
Over time, coercively controlling behavior erodes the victim's sense of self, their confidence and self-esteem, agency and autonomy.
The abuser creates an unreal world of contradiction, confusion and fear. Moreover, 51% of victims do not even know that they are being abused, manipulated, and controlled. Excerpt is modified from (Richards, 2022).
While coercive control was initially understood within domestic or intimate relationships, it also plays a large role in abusive group environments...aka cults or harmful high-demand/high-control religions. We often find these dynamics in cases of sex trafficking and gangs as well.
This category of high-control or high-demand groups can span from those that are religious, spiritual, new age, high-performance, self-improvement, meditation & yoga groups, online groups, MLMs (multi-level marketing), political groups, philosophy & psychology groups, and even psychotherapy groups.

Timeline of
Jennifer French Tomasic's Life
It’s a pleasure to share some of life’s moments with you all. I take my work with survivors (or thrivers!) very seriously, and part of that is recognizing that in systems of abuse, there exists a hierarchy and warping of power dynamics. I speak about this with those who choose to work with me. One of the ways I try to level this dynamic with someone who is trusting me enough to allow me into their inner life is to be willing to share personally with those who have questions or curiosities. I certainly reserve the right to not share, but I most often find that questions bring us closer together, and sharing allows us to see our humanity and create trust. I see myself as an educated helper to journey and navigate all you are going through in a way that’s collaborative, transparent, and empowering for you.
Jennifer grew up in a close family that valued travel and lived internationally. This diverse exposure to different cultures and lifestyles shaped her appreciation for the wild and colorful variations of human experiences.
While living in New York City in my early 20s, I felt she had discovered her calling in life when she found the profession of homebirth midwifery. This pivotal moment set her on a path that combined her interests in health and supporting women during vulnerable times.
Jennifer became a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and established her own midwifery practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. Through her practice, she provided compassionate and personalized care to expectant mothers, supporting families through one of the most significant experiences of their lives.
In addition to her midwifery work, Jennifer joined a Mystical Christian School, where she owned and operated meditation centers. Initially drawn in by the spiritual teachings and beautiful community, she later discovered that leadership employed high-demand and high-control tactics characteristic of a cult. This period was marked by a confusing whirlwind of manipulation, undue influence, spiritual and religious abuse, and feelings of love.
Following her departure from the group, Jennifer spent several years working in corporate America. This period provided her with stability and the necessary time to reconnect with family, friends and most importantly, begin to rediscover herself.
The podcast was born out of a desire to support both survivors and families of those with a loved one in a group of high control / high demand. This type of experience can be so confusing and emotional. For many families, it’s almost like having to mourn the death of a loved one, who is actually still alive. Jennifer shares her personal experience of how she got in and how she got out in episodes 1 and 2.
In 2000, Jennifer was accepted to the Master’s program in Psychology of coercive control at Salford University in the UK. This education became the foundation for her work expanding to support survivors and families and working in the court system as an expert witness. To expand her expert witness scope of knowledge, Jennifer started her PhD in Forensic Psychology with a specialty in Forensic Victimology from Alliant International University in 2024.

March 28, 2024Jennifer has been a tremendous resource. Throughout the past two years of working with her, I've been able to understand and recover from my experience in a coercive control... read more group. Learning the similarities of the narcissistic leaders in these high-control groups has been one of the biggest takeaways that has impacted my ability to forgive myself and heal from the experience. Working on unpacking interjects, defined as the unconscious adoption of the "teachings" woven into my belief system, has been invaluable. Also, helpful has been the recovery group that meets regularly, guiding us through a workbook filled with research, studies, and learning from others who have been involved with coercive groups to understand the shared characteristics. Learning about this experience has removed the stigma and embarrassment pivotal to my recovery and re-entry into learning to trust others and, most importantly, trust my intuition.
